พระธาตุพนม ถือเป็นปูชนียสถานอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของชาวพุทธในแถบลุ่มน้ำโขง อันได้แก่ชาวไทย ลาว กัมพูชาและเวียตนาม เป็นที่บรรจุ "พระอุรังคธาตุ" ของพระพุทธเจ้า ประดิษฐานอยู่ที่วัดพระธาตุพนม ริมฝั่งขวาแม่น้ำโขง ณ อำเภอธาตุพนม จังหวัดนครพนม สูงจากพื้นดินถึงยอดฉัตร 57 เมตร องค์ฉัตรทำด้วยทองคำ หนักประมาณ 16 กิโลกรัม ปลียอดเป็นทองคำและบัวตูมเงินล้อมเพชร จำนวน 200 เม็ด
ตำนานกล่าวว่า เจดีย์พระธาตุพนมครั้งแรกสร้างขึ้นเมื่อประมาณ พ.ศ. 8 รูปทรงสี่เหลี่ยม สูงประมาณ 8-12 เมตร ด้วยดินเหนียวเผาไฟ โดยการนำของพระมหากัสสปะพร้อมด้วยสาวก ประมาณ 500 รูป และได้มีการบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์มาโดยลำดับ
เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2518 พระธาตุพนมพังทลายลงทั้งองค์ หลังจากที่ฝนได้ตกหนักติดต่อกันหลายวัน ได้ค้นพบพระอุรังคธาตุของพระพุทธเจ้าและสิ่งของมีค่าเป็นจำนวนมาก กรมศิลปากรได้ทำการบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์ใหม่ทั้งองค์ ได้ประกอบพระราชพิธียกฉัตรทองคำ 5 ชั้นขึ้นประดิษฐานไว้บนยอดพระเจดีย์ พร้อมบรรจุพระอุรังคธาตุและสิ่งของอันมีค่าอื่นๆไว้ภายใน โดยสมเด็จพระสังฆราชสกลมหาสังฆปรินายก และองค์พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช รัชกาลที่ 9 แห่งราชจักรีวงศ์พร้อมด้วยสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิต์พระบรมราชินีนารถ ได้เสด็จมาเป็นองค์ประธานในพิธี เมื่อวันที่ 23 มีนาคม

งานเทศการนมัสการพระธาตุพนมได้จัดเป็นประจำทุกปี ระหว่างวันขึ้น 8 ค่ำ จนถึงวันแรม 1 ค่ำเดือน 3 (วันมาฆบูชา) ชาวพุทธทั้งมวลเป็นที่รู้จักกันทั่วไปว่า "บุญเดือนสาม" ถือเป็นโอกาสอันดีของชาวพุทธที่จะได้นำผลผลิตที่เก็บเกี่ยวได้ตามฤดูกาลเป็นพุทธบูชา เป็นประเพณีการถวายข้าวพีชภาค และการแห่กองบุญของชาวพุทธและข้าโอกาสอันถือเป็นสิริมงคลและมีค่ายิ่งในชีวิต พระธาตุพนมถือเป็นศูนย์รวมแห่งจิตใจ เป็นศูนย์รวมของการถ่ายโอนวัฒนธรรมอันเก่าแก่ของสังคมพุทธในแถบลุ่มน้ำโขงแห่งนี้
Prathatphanom Shrine
Prathatphanom shrine is considered to be one of the sacred Bhudist sites in Thailand and Laos, located at Wat Prathatphanom in Thatphanom district of Nakhonphanom. It is believed that a relic of the Buddha's Breastbone was enshrined within Prathatphanom chedi by Pra Maha Kassapa about 8 years after the Buddha's death.
It is said that original reliquary of Prathatphanom was probably build of bricks in the shape of four sided - kiln. It was 8-12 meters hight, and has been restored several times since then.
In 1975 the tower which surmounts the reliquary collapsed after several days of heavy rains since the structure has become progressive weaker over the centuries. The Breastbone Relic of Buddha and other precious objects were found within the reliquary. It was reconstructed in 1977 and completed in 1979. It soars to height of 57 meters. Aroyal ceremony was performed for the installation of the five-teired gold umbrella, weighing about 16 kilograms, Which adoms the top of the That, and to re-enshrine the Breastbone Relic of Buddha and other precious objects within. His Majesty,King Bhumibol, the ninth King of Chakri Dynasty, and the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand came to preside over the ceremony on 23 March 1979. The great annual festival is held in late January or early February in the third luna month. On very special occassion, the villagers come to pay respect to Prathatphanom shrine with their annually harvested corps. Buddhists in neighboring countries also revere this site and appreciate any opportunity to visit.
